Land Acknowledgement

Climate Justice Durham exists on lands that have been, and continue to be, the home of the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg for thousands of years before European colonization. Today, this community is home to Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. The area currently known as Durham Region is the traditional and treaty territory of the Williams Treaties First Nations, which include Curve Lake First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Alderville First Nation, Chippewas of Beausoleil First Nation, Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, Chippewas of Rama First Nation,
and the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

There is a deeply unjust history of exploitation and mistreatment of the Indigenous Peoples that call these lands home, and we understand that we are all treaty people with the responsibility to do the continuous work of reconciliation. We honour and respect these Nations as rights holders and are grateful to them for their stewardship of these lands and waters.
We also thank them for their willingness to share their deep knowledge
of the earth and our relations, helping us repair and rebuild our
relationships with them and with the natural world.

We also recognize those who came here involuntarily, particularly those brought to these lands because of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and enslavement. We honour these ancestors of African origin and descent.
We are committed to upending oppressive systems that prioritize
profit over people and planet, and to building a culture that
centres belonging and safety for all.
